Nuts and Bolts are Just Simple Machines

Without machines we would not have many of the things in our world that we have come to rely on. We would not have computers or washing machines or dryers or cars. Without machines we would have to put out much more energy to do the things that we need to do every day and it would take more time. There are many complicated machines, like the ones mentioned already, but there are also simple machines that play a big role in our lives.

Simple machines are those that don’t have moving parts, like nuts and bolts and screws which include Building Fasteners, Line Fasteners, Marine Fasteners or Heavy Hex Bolts.

Differences Between Screws and Bolts

Screws are made with a cylindrical rod that has at least one spiral thread on the cylinder. Screws consist of a head and a shank. The shank is where you will find the threads. The head is bigger than the shank and this is the part that allows you to turn the screw. Bolts and nuts come in pairs; the shank and the end of the bolt are often the same size, which is why they need a nut at the end. The nut holds the bolt in place securely.

Types of Nuts and Bolts Mean Different Purposes

There are many kinds of nuts and bolts and each has their own purpose. Some of the kinds of bolts you might come across include carriage bolts, hex bolts, expansion bolts, and square head bolts. There are hex nuts, cap nuts and spring nuts and many other types as well. Each type of bolt and nut has its own characteristics. Some are dome headed while others do not have heads at all. Some, like hex bolts, have heads that are formed so that they can be turned by a wrench.

There are only a few markers between a screw and a bolt that make them stand apart. Sometimes people use size as a factor – smaller screws are called screws and larger ones are called bolts. Bolts and nuts and screws are really just simple machines though. They can work alone (as with simple screws) or they can work in pairs (as with nuts and bolts) but these simple machines make our lives easier. There is not a doubt about that.
